Getting here

One highway, the right direction

We're at 21 Progress Ave, Unit 7, just off the 401 in Scarborough — the first substantial exit once you're past the Rouge coming west.

  • Ajax — roughly 25 minutes, joining at Harwood or Salem.
  • Whitby — around 30 minutes via Brock Street or Thickson.
  • Oshawa — about 35 minutes from the Simcoe or Harmony interchanges.
  • Bowmanville, Courtice and further east — 40 minutes and up, and worth being realistic about at that distance.

Progress Avenue is a business park, not a retail strip, so there's free on-site parking and nothing to hunt for.

The commute works in your favour, which most people don't consider.

Durham's traffic problem is westbound in the morning and eastbound at night. If you train mid-morning or late evening you're running against the flow both ways — which is why our Durham clients tend to book outside standard hours and find the drive shorter than they expected.

Pickering has its own page

If you're in Pickering specifically, the route and timings are a little different and we've covered them separately on the Pickering page.

What you're driving for

Three things you won't find closer

If none of these matter to you, train in Durham. There are good gyms out there and we'd say so.

01 — Coaching

One client per coach, always

Not one trainer running two or three people and calling it personal training. Ask that question of anywhere you're considering — the answers vary more than you'd expect.

02 — Equipment

Not available east of here

Durham is well supplied with gyms and thin on curated equipment. Ours was assembled machine by machine for its engineering, and several pieces aren't in another gym in Canada. See the floor.

03 — Privacy

Appointment-only, genuinely

No memberships, no drop-ins, no open floor. During your hour the gym is yours — which is a different product from a quiet gym at an off-peak time.

Durham clients

Who makes the drive

  • Commuters already heading west. If you drive into Toronto for work, we're on the way rather than out of it — a session either side costs almost nothing extra.
  • People who've run out of local options. Durham is well supplied with gyms and thinner on private one-to-one coaching with this level of equipment.
  • Competitors and serious lifters. Contest prep, peak week, and a floor built for it.
  • Anyone working around an old injury. Exercise selection and set-up matter more than effort. More here.

Questions

Common questions

Do you have a gym in Durham Region?

No. Hammer Fitness has one facility, at 21 Progress Ave, Unit 7 in Scarborough, just off the 401 west of Durham. A significant share of our clients travel from Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa.

How far is it from Ajax, Whitby or Oshawa?

Roughly 25 minutes from Ajax, 30 from Whitby and 35 from Oshawa outside peak hours, on a single westbound run down the 401. Bowmanville and Courtice are 40 minutes and up.

What about Pickering?

Pickering is closer — around 20 minutes — and we've set out the route and timings on a separate page for it.

When should I book to avoid traffic?

Durham traffic is heaviest westbound in the morning and eastbound in the evening. Mid-morning and later-evening sessions run against the flow in both directions, which is what most of our Durham clients do.

Is it worth driving from Durham?

For equipment access, no — train locally. For private one-to-one coaching, a curated equipment floor and a session where nothing is shared or queued for, most of our Durham clients say yes. The consultation is free, so see the place first.

Do you offer online coaching for clients further east?

Yes. For Bowmanville, Port Perry and beyond, online coaching is often the more sensible option — remote programming, weekly check-ins and direct access to your coach. We'll be honest on the call about which fits.
