Personal training for women
Half our clients are women, and almost all of them arrive having been sold the same three ideas: lift light, do more cardio, eat less. All three are why the last attempt didn't work. Private, one-to-one coaching in Scarborough, on a floor where nobody is watching.
The thing everyone asks
It's the first question in almost every consultation, so let's deal with it properly rather than just reassuring you.
Building a large amount of muscle is difficult, slow and deliberate. It takes years of specific training, a consistent calorie surplus, and — for the physiques people picture when they say "bulky" — pharmacological help. It does not happen accidentally to someone lifting three times a week while eating in a deficit.
What actually produces the look most women describe wanting — firmer, tighter, more shape — is more muscle and less fat. Those are the same two things. There is no third process called "toning."
Lifting light weights for high reps doesn't tone anything. It just trains the same muscle with less stimulus, which is why that approach so reliably produces no visible change and a lot of frustration.
The reason a lot of women have never seen results from training is that they were coached to avoid the exact stimulus that produces them.
What we actually hear
Appointment-only means the floor isn't shared. No being looked at, no waiting for a rack, no performing. For a lot of clients this is the single reason they keep showing up — and it's not a small thing.
Not handed a circuit and left. Every movement is taught and corrected, so you leave knowing what you're doing and why — which is what makes it stick when life gets busy.
Built around your history, your schedule and what you want to change. Not a women's template, which is usually a men's template with the weights reduced and pink added.
Our clients range from complete beginners through to competitors preparing for the stage — including a coach on our own team, Lindsay Martens, an IFBB Fit Model Pro. The range of starting points is visible in the transformations.
Beyond the mirror
The aesthetic goal is a completely legitimate reason to train and we're not going to lecture you out of it. But resistance training buys other things that matter more the longer you do it.
On the phases of life that change what training should look like — pregnancy and postpartum, perimenopause and menopause, or any condition affecting energy, recovery or joints — the programme should change with them, and we build accordingly.
What we won't do is give medical guidance. Those decisions belong with your physician, and we're glad to build training around whatever they advise.
Real results
Different starting points, different goals, the same method. No filters, no flattering angles, no promises about how fast.

How it works
A free consultation covering your goal, training history, schedule and anything we need to work around. If we're not the right fit, we'll say so — a class-based gym or a cheaper option is sometimes the honest answer.
Your first session is not designed to make you sore or prove anything. It's about learning positions and finding your starting loads. Nobody gets thrown into the deep end for effect.
You work with the same person each session, so nobody is relearning your history or your limitations. Your programme is adjusted as you progress rather than repeated.
Plans use foods you'll actually eat, with portion sizes for every item. Sustainable beats optimal, because the optimal plan you abandon in week three is worth nothing.
More on how the coaching runs is on our personal training page, and if you're weighing us against a class-based gym, we've set out the honest comparison.
Questions
No. Building a large amount of muscle takes years of specific training, a sustained calorie surplus, and for the physiques most people picture, pharmacological assistance. It does not happen by accident. The firmer, tighter look most women describe wanting is more muscle and less fat, which is exactly what resistance training produces.
There is no separate process called toning. What changes how a body looks is muscle gained and fat lost. Lifting very light for high reps trains the same muscle with less stimulus, which is why that approach so often produces no visible change.
No. Complete beginners are a large part of who we work with. Every movement is taught, loads are scaled to where you actually are, and the first session is about learning positions rather than exhausting you.
No. Hammer Fitness is private and appointment-only, so the floor is yours during your session. No sharing equipment, no waiting, no audience. For many clients that is the deciding factor.
Yes. Our coaching team includes Lindsay Martens, an IFBB Fit Model Pro, alongside the rest of the team. Raise any preference on the consultation and we will match you appropriately.
Training through these phases is common and the programme should change with them. Those decisions need to be made with your physician, and we build training around whatever they advise rather than giving medical guidance ourselves.
Classes and women's-only facilities work well for community, variety and general fitness. What we offer is one coach, one client, a programme written for your body, and a private floor. If community is what keeps you consistent, a class-based gym is genuinely the better fit and we will tell you so.
