How it works
Tell us your goal, training history, and timeline. We map out exactly how to get you there — no pressure, no obligation.
We build a program from scratch around your body and goals — then book your private sessions at times that fit your week.
You train with your coach, who adjusts every session based on your progress — the same coaching team every time. You just show up; we handle the rest.
Who trains here
A private training studio sounds like it's for athletes and people who are already in shape. It isn't. The floor on a Tuesday morning is nurses coming off a night shift, parents who get exactly one clear hour before school pickup, people in their fifties who were told to start lifting and have no idea where to begin, and a handful of competitors on stage prep.
What they share isn't fitness level. It's that a commercial gym had already failed them — either because nobody showed them what to do, or because the plan they found online assumed a life they don't have.
Appointment-only exists for exactly this. Your session is a fixed slot in your week that somebody else is expecting you at, on a floor with no queue for the squat rack at 6pm and nobody watching you learn.
If your week is genuinely unpredictable, say so on the call. We'd rather build around two sessions you'll actually make than four you won't — and we'll tell you honestly if we don't think the schedule works.
What you're paying for
Plenty of personal training is supervision with a stopwatch. Someone counts your reps, tells you it's a good session, and books you in for Thursday. You get company and a bit of accountability. You do not get a coach.
Your coach arrives having looked at what you did last time and what it produced, and changes something on the basis of it. If nothing changed, nobody was thinking.
You should be able to explain what each exercise in your programme is there to do. Clients who understand the plan stick to it when we're not in the room — which is most of the week.
If your sleep is the reason you've stalled, we'll say that instead of adding another cardio session. Being pleasant about it would be easier and would cost you months.

The measure of a coach is what happens when progress stops. Everyone looks good while the newbie gains are arriving. The job starts at the plateau — working out whether it's the programme, the food, the sleep or the stress, and changing the right one.
What actually happens
No mystery, no "trust the process." Here's the real sequence.
Forty-five minutes. Your goal, your training history, your injuries, your actual weekly schedule. You leave knowing what we'd do and what it costs, whether or not you sign up.
We look at how you move before we load anything — what your joints will tolerate, where the restrictions are, what you can do well today. Body composition measured, so progress is a number rather than a feeling.
Lighter than you expect. We're building the pattern before we build the load, because a well-executed moderate set beats a heavy one done badly — and it's what keeps you training in month six.
Technique is holding, so the weight starts climbing. This is usually the week people notice strength moving, and it's earlier than most expect.
We re-measure, compare against the baseline, and rewrite the programme on what the numbers actually did — not on what they were supposed to do. Then the cycle runs again.
Membership, class, or coach?
There are cheaper options in Scarborough, and for some people they're the right call. A membership works if you already know how to programme for yourself. A class works if community and variety are what keep you turning up, and your goal is general health. We do one thing: coached training, by appointment, on a private floor — either 1-on-1 or semi-private with two to four people. Here's what that actually buys you.
| Gym membership | Group class | Coached at Hammer Fitness | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your programme | You build it | One session for the whole room | Written for you, rewritten as you progress |
| Technique | Nobody watching | Occasional cues across a full class | Corrected every rep |
| Load | You guess | Scaled options, not individual | Set for your body and current recovery |
| Injuries | Not addressed | Modify or sit out | Programmed around from day one |
| Crowds | Peak-hour queues | Depends on class size | None — appointment only, four people maximum |
| Best for | Experienced, self-directed lifters | General fitness and motivation | A specific target, a deadline, or a history of not getting there |
We don't run classes, and we won't pretend they're useless. If enjoyment and community are what get you through the door, a class-based gym is genuinely the better buy — and we'll say so on the call.
Where coached training wins is when you have a specific outcome in mind, something to work around, or a history of starting and stopping. That's when a plan built for your body — and corrected the moment it stalls — is worth more than the difference in price.
Worth asking of anyone you're considering: is it the same coach every session, how many people share the floor, and is the programme written for you or pulled from a template? Ours is the same coach, four people maximum, and written from scratch.
Before you commit
Six questions worth asking anyone you're considering — us included. If a gym won't answer these plainly, that's your answer.
Rotating trainers means nobody holds the thread of your progress. Each session starts from scratch because the person in front of you wasn't there last week.
Ask to see one. A programme built for your body looks different from a template with your name at the top, and the difference is obvious in about ten seconds.
"Personal training" covers everything from genuinely 1-on-1 to one trainer watching eight people. Get a number.
Everyone plateaus. The question is whether the plan gets rewritten or you get told to try harder.
"We'll modify it" is not a plan. Programming around an injury means building the programme differently from day one, not removing exercises on the day.
If you can't get a number out of them before signing, that's information. We give you one at the consultation, free, with no obligation attached.
And one honest caveat. If you already know how to programme for yourself and you're consistent, a gym membership in Scarborough is better value than any of this, and we'll tell you so on the call rather than sell you something you don't need.
Areas we serve
We're at 21 Progress Ave, just off Kennedy and the 401 — which puts most of Scarborough within about fifteen minutes, and a good part of the east GTA within thirty. Clients travel in regularly from:
Further out, we also run dedicated pages for North York, Markham, Etobicoke, Durham and the wider GTA. Can't get to Scarborough at all? Our online coaching runs the same method remotely.
Why Scarborough
Founder Amer Kamra grew up in Scarborough — and built Hammer Fitness here on purpose. He was told to open downtown or in a flashier neighbourhood. He didn't. The bet was simple: master the craft so completely that people seek you out, wherever you are. Fourteen years and 1,200+ five-star reviews later, clients now travel from across the GTA — and from other cities and countries — to train at 21 Progress Ave. Proof that world-class coaching can live anywhere it's built on real expertise.
Who we train
Scarborough clients come to us from very different starting points. If one of these is you, we've written about it in detail.
Training and nutrition built around female physiology, without the myths about lifting heavy.
Recovery, joints and hormones change what optimal looks like. The programme should change with them.
We programme around it from day one rather than telling you to sit out and come back later.
Stage-ready preparation from a team that has taken athletes to pro cards and overall titles.
Comparing a membership against coaching? Here's an honest look at when each one is the better buy.
Real Toronto market rates by tier, and where we sit in them. No "contact us for pricing".
Outside Scarborough? We also train clients in North York, Markham, Etobicoke and Durham.
The facility
Rare, biomechanically-selected machines chosen for their resistance curves rather than their brand — and a floor where a coach is always within arm's reach, because there are never more than four people on it.

Curious what's actually on the floor? We've catalogued it on our equipment page — including the pieces you won't find in another gym in Canada.

Straight answer
Most gyms make you book a call to find out. Here is the actual market, so you can work out where your budget lands before you speak to anyone.
| Tier | Per session | What you're paying for |
|---|---|---|
| Big-box trainer | $50 – $75 | A certified trainer on a busy floor, often newly qualified, usually a template programme. |
| Independent trainer | $75 – $110 | More experience, more individual attention. Quality varies enormously — there is no standard. |
| Specialist studio | $110 – $150 | A private facility, experienced coaches, programming written for you and revised as you go. This is our tier. |
| "Celebrity" coach | $200 + | Audience size, not coaching ability. You're paying for their following. |
That top tier is worth being honest about. Above roughly $150 a session, what changes is usually the coach's marketing reach rather than their competence. A large Instagram following is evidence that someone is good at Instagram. It tells you nothing about whether they can programme around your shoulder.
Semi-private sits meaningfully below 1-on-1 per session, because you're sharing the coach's time with two or three other people — while still running your own programme. For a lot of people it's the better value.
We give you an exact number at the free consultation, once we know your goal, your training history and how often you'd train — because quoting a price before that is guessing. If you want the full breakdown of Toronto rates first, we've written it up on our personal training cost page.
Questions
Because every program is fully customized to your goals, training history, and session frequency, pricing is tailored to your plan. Semi-private works out lower per session than 1-on-1. The best next step is a free consultation — we'll map out what you need and give you exact options, with no pressure or obligation.
No classes and no drop-in membership. What we do offer alongside private 1-on-1 is semi-private coaching — two to four people with one coach, everyone on their own programme, still by appointment on a private floor. If a full group class is what you're after, a class-based gym is genuinely the right fit and we'll tell you that on the call rather than sell you something else.
In 1-on-1 your coach's attention is entirely yours for the session. In semi-private you share the floor with up to three other people, each running their own programme, with the same coach moving between you. The programming is individual either way — semi-private simply costs less per session and suits people who like training alongside others.
If you already know how to programme for yourself, a membership is the better value and we'd say so. Coaching earns its price when you have a specific target, something to work around, or a history of starting and stopping — because the plan is built for your body and corrected the moment it stalls.

Yes. Coached training is ideal for beginners — your coach teaches you every movement, scales everything to your level, and keeps you safe. Many of our biggest transformations started with people who had never trained before.
You never train alone or with rotating staff — it's the same expert coach every session, in a private appointment-only studio, on rare biomechanically-optimized equipment. Our programming is rooted in resistance-training science, not templates. That's how we deliver fast, lasting fat-loss results.
